Real Number Computability and Real Number Representation
I will discuss a possible implementation, using lazy functional programming, of exact computation on real numbers. In this implementation, the representation used for the reals affects the class of computable functions. In particular the standard digital notation is not adequate and new representations for the real numbers have to be used. An interesting solution is to adopt a representation using the golden ratio as a base. -

I'll try to explain what kind of categorical structure one would need to give an account of control flow in functional languages. In particular, there is an adjunction (essentially Filinski's notion of "co-currying") that seems to be of some importance. -

A friend of mine in his fourth, final, year in Oxford committed suicide last Easter. I'd like to say a bit about how his death affected me, and about suicide in Oxford and the appalling way in which it is dealt with by the media. I'll also mention support organizations such as the Samaritans. -

Specification and Proof of a Filesystem Component, a CASE study
DEC Livingston have been developing a new filesystem for a while. I used to work for them, and I recently spent some time modelling, and proving some properties of, file locking and the client/server mechanism. I'll describe the system and the proof of a desirable property, and discuss whether the property does in fact hold. - 15 November 1994

My daughter Kaija died at the end of August. She had been very ill since January. I took a lot of time to look after her. Other people in the Lab have had, or will have, people close to them get very ill, so maybe they would like to hear about how it went for me and Kaija. -

Medieval beginnings of Western Theatre
"Owing to a "siege econcomy", theatre in the west died out I think in the seventh or eigth century. All the skills associated with the theatre vanished.
I want to talk about the reestablishment of Western theatre, from its humble beginnings as liturgical illustration during Mass to its ultimate divorce from the church at the reformation.
This talk will, inevitably, be quite superficial --- what do you expect in twenty minutes?"

I'll informally present proof nets for linear and conventional intuitionistic logics as an alternative calculus for derivations, and then give reduction rules and examine some insights this gives us into copying and sharing in typed lambda calculus. I'll then briefly mention some possible extensions. This work isn't particularly original- it's put together from a number of sources- but it's something I'm thinking about at the minute.
