Organisation

The Laboratory is a research institute within the School of Informatics. It has around 85 members. These include 23 members of teaching staff, 25 other research staff, and almost 40 PhD students, together with a number of visitors, support staff, and other members of the University who are associate members of the Laboratory.

The Laboratory is managed on a day to day basis by its Director, Philip Wadler , and his deputy. The Research Committee, consisting mainly of the independent researchers of LFCS, and the business meeting, composed of all members of the Laboratory, meet regularly and provide input to the direction and running of the Laboratory. Further details are available on the administrative structure of LFCS.

LFCS has its own budget, from which it maintains a PhD studentship, a research travel fund and provides some small project grants. Individual grant management is the responsibility of investigators, but LFCS provides a strong cultural environment to support this research.

Research in the LFCS is organised around the interests and projects of staff members as well as several research groups. The weekly lab lunch provides a forum for research communication in LFCS with each member giving a short presentation. This is supplemented by research clubs in specific areas, and a more formal seminar series. We also provide training in theoretical computer science with the Postgraduate Course in Theory of Computation aimed at our first year PhD students.
