Literate Programming: A Review

Angus Duggan

Abstract: The literate programming concept was formulated by D. E. Knuth in 1984. Since then, there has been relatively little interest in the system which Knuth described (with reference to the TeX project) as ``the most important thing about all this research''. This article is a review of the literate programming concept, and a survey of research in the area.

Some of the pieces of related work which have used experimental results to guide the design of literate programming tools will also be reviewed.
